ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Jeanne Salis, 2023

My art is a meditation on the intricate cycle of life and death, the dance between movement and stillness. Color and landscape serve as vehicles for expressing both the joy of living and the sorrow of loss.

Each abstract painting begins with a simple mark, line or wash of color placed upon the canvas. I intuitively react, initiating a call and response process. Often this dialogue strays from the initial impulse, leading to unexpected transformations and a deeper emotional truth.

Rooted in poetry, music and memory, my art is inspired by the timeless echoes of cave art and a 15th century Nahuatl (Mexico) poem on mortality that finds solace in flowers, song and poetry. These influences resonate through my use of line and vibrant color, reflecting our shared human experience. Lines and marks suggest figures, trees or flowers. Each layer of oil or acrylic paint embodies emotion and the complexity of our lives- what is visible and invisible, remembered and forgotten.

In a world often overshadowed by death and violence, my work highlights the wonder of life, the light of the sun, while being conscious of the depth of darkness.
