On Making Abstract Art

With all that is occurring nowadays I wonder why I make abstract art. Given the seriousness of our times, it seems that abstract art, be it objective or- especially- nonobjective, is a frivolous out-of-touch activity. How does it have value in today’s world of Covid, conflict, destruction of flora and fauna, climate change?  Why make abstract art?

But then I remember it is precisely during these times when we are reminded of the fragility of life that abstract art brings to us an affirmation of life, of ourselves. In addition to suffering and death, anger and frustration there exist joy, beauty, the energy of life to remind us of our humanity. Color to evoke our emotions; the line to carry the energy and movement of life; the mark to say I am, we are, since the days of cave art. For me, the act of making abstract art is a celebration of life. Our lives and all those that were.

In this spirit I continue to post my artwork.
